Works in Progress

A lot of things are half-finished right now, but that’s OK (I tell myself):

My mosaic flowerpot:

My living room walls:

The garden, of course, is the ultimate forever work in progress.

So there’s supplies and drop cloths and crap everywhere, but at least things are happening! Soooo exciting to paint over the mauve walls. Just need second coats on the walls and to do the trim. We’ll get there.

The blue (green?) is Benjamin Moore’s “Wyethe Blue” and the other is “Pink Damask” (“Opulence” was too white).

I worked on the pot during the week and also this weekend. I need to buy the special cutters to cut more glass.

Friday night, I decided to dig out a bunch of oregano — I had more than I need. In its place went more onions and lettuce. I also transplanted some cilantro seedlings. My friend K. took some of the oregano off my hands; the rest I plan to move to the side of the house. If it could spread like crazy there and be a ground cover, that would be wonderful.

Today I planted some green beans (saved seed from last year). At this point I’m completely out of space in the beds and pots, so I need to acquire more big pots. Or, I could pull the trigger on another tall raised bed. I do have two spots reserved for the tomatoes.

Today’s weather was gorgeous. It was close to 90 degrees during the week. And I loved it. I love summer! I’m officially excited. I need new flip flops stat. I’ve got two concerts on the calendar now, July and August. I’m edging closer to planning a vacation. A couple years ago, maybe 2021, I decided that summer would be the summer of “yes.” (A reaction to the pandemic.) I said “yes” to any invitation or plans, and tried harder to plan stuff myself. And guess what, it was a lot of fun. So maybe I should do that again.

Meals this week — too much takeout:

Monday: spaghetti and meatballs

Tuesday: Jersey Kebab (gyros)

Wednesday: scrounge: turkey sandwich with arugula for me

Thursday: slices from Stella Pizza

Friday: Circles Thai, kids were all out.

Saturday: Holy City Publick House for me and Tom

Tuesday lunch: turkey sandwich with garden lettuce and arugula

Wednesday lunch: leftover gyro

Friday lunch: bought

I had a boss who packed his lunch in old bread bags. At the time I thought that was a very boring old man thing to do, and now I do THE SAME THING. Also, when you asked what he would be doing on the weekend, he would always say, “Napping.” And now I get it.

So happy to see this planter in use finally, after staring at it empty all winter

I was thinking how I want to be scientific about gardening. There’s so much data out there for the gathering. I want to track which plants do well in what conditions, how many hours of sun each spot gets, which fertilizer works best. Yet… I pretty much never do. I wing it constantly. I just don’t have that scientific bent, or I’m too impatient. Maybe someday.
