What happens when there’s three days of wind and rain and you don’t check on your broccoli and Brussels sprouts?
A Brassica Massacre.
When I went to check on them this week, they were nearly all nibbled away, and the culprits, the bright green cabbage worms, were still lolling about. I must have picked eight off that day, and another four yesterday. So… next year, I am going to have to take their protection more seriously. Do it earlier, make it more secure, and check them religiously. (Or, start using some kind of repellent.) I half-assed it this time.
There are two plants that might survive, but at this point, who knows.
In better news, I see baby turnips and picked one while I was thinning them again. I know that the leaves are edible too, but I haven’t tried them yet.

In food preservation news, I blanched and froze four heads of broccoli from the farmers market, on Thursday night. And on Wednesday night, I froze three ears’ worth of leftover corn. If nothing else, I can use it in shepherd’s pie like I did last weekend.

In food-sharing news, I gave away all my hot cherry peppers to someone in my Buy Nothing group. I was so glad they didn’t go to waste.

Thursday might have been the best day of this week. The first day of my four-day weekend, it began with getting my grays covered (finally) at my hairdresser’s, which meant a nice scalp massage and hot towel treatment. Ahhh. Back at home I gardened and weedwhacked all over, and we got pizza for dinner. The weather was gorgeous Thursday and Friday, with highs around 80.

Friday was wedding prep time. At the last second, I decided my dingy white cardigan wouldn’t do, so I went to Target and found the perfect color blue cardigan to match my dress, and it was the exact amount that I had on my latest Fetch gift card: $25. I also bought a curling iron, which I haven’t owned in years, to try to redo my hair a bit from the blowout of the day before.
We headed down in the afternoon and everything went smoothly. The wedding was wonderful. I haven’t danced like that in a minute! So, so happy for the new couple. I just wish I didn’t have this new cold dogging me (another round of drip and coughing).

Monday: leftover shepherd’s pie before heading over to watch F’s volleyball game.
Tuesday: grilled cheese (cheddar on sourdough) and sauteed green beans from the garden for me and F.
Wednesday: grilled chicken, corn on the cob and tater tots (Tom cooked) for me, N and Tom; F had chicken nuggets and steamed broccoli.
Thursday: Stella Pizza
Friday: wedding buffet
Saturday: pizza and hoagies at my parents’ for my nephew’s birthday
Tuesday lunch: brought tuna, but bought a latte. Worked from home on Wednesday.
Spending: $20 ticket for parking on the street overnight, here at home; about $150 on my hair including tip; $20 for the curling iron; $7 for snacks/coffee at Wawa ahead of wedding; $16 for coffee, water and a snack on the boardwalk the morning after; $16 on still more Mucinex (had a coupon, at least); $25 for my nephew; $$$ for wedding gift.
It was nice to be down the Shore in the off season, to be on the boardwalk in a hoodie and jeans with rain spitting and the wind blowing. It’s been a while since I did that.
Yesterday I was exhausted from coughing all night in the hotel room. Back at home, I did manage to do dishes and a load of wash, and take Rocco for a walk. And go to CVS for the Mucinex and a birthday card. Today I feel better (slept much better), but it’s raining pretty steadily. We’ll see what the day holds.
