Hallelujah, Holy Shit, Where’s the Tylenol?

Last night was one of those nights where I ended up lying awake questioning most of my life choices. This was precipitated by Tom’s near-constant snoring, and also both the dog and the cat trying to get in the bedroom. I didn’t fall asleep til the wee hours, and then woke up feeling sick.

Usually I will make Tom sleep on the couch if he snores, but for some reason I felt bad doing so this time.

Out of the tumult of thoughts came one idea that I think I’ll implement: making Tom be in charge of Christmas gifts for the kids this year. What a load off my plate that would be. He usually works less around the holidays anyway.

When I did fall asleep I had really unpleasant dreams.

Since I felt sick, I had to skip brunch with the West Side ladies this morning. So my pity party continues. Wahhhh.

At least yesterday was nice. Warm but not too hot. I slept in, then got to work roasting a pan of tomatoes. Next I spent a lot of time outside, watering, picking allll the beans, cutting back the beans a little, and finally properly securing the cover on the brassicas. I also picked some peppers. I had to compost a lot of the beans that had gotten too plump. Next year I’ll have to be more vigilant about finding them in time. I mentioned in another post that I get 15 beans a day, but I think 30 is more accurate. On Monday I picked 54!

Inside the bean wall I came across these two specimens:

Differential grasshopper

And what looks to be an invasive European mantis. Do you remember being told as a child that it was illegal to kill praying mantises? Turns out that was an urban myth.

Later I drove N and his GF to the mall, did some wash, and investigated speech therapy… for myself. I have a small issue that, at age 49, I would finally like to tackle. More on that later, once I get an appointment.

Didn’t make it to the farmers’ market. Might try to find some local corn elsewhere today, for dinner.

Tom and I enjoyed a quiet dinner at Holy City Publick House before it started filling up, and we had a beer outside at home when we got home.

The week went well. Labor Day was nice. After knocking out a few garden tasks (planted the basil sprig in a pot, relocated parsley, relocated one brassica to its own big pot, and fertilized a lot of plants with compost), I spent the afternoon at the pool with my mom and friends E and E.

Meals this week:

Monday: Zena’s (Mediterranean)

Tuesday: chicken nuggets, onion rings, sauteed green beans from the garden (really good), and misdelivered biscuits with sausage gravy (dropped off here but meant for the office building that shares our address).

Wednesday: Oasis (Mexican food)

Thursday: Oasis leftovers for me, McDonald’s for Tom & F (not my idea!)

Friday: green beans and French fries. The frozen fries came with a packet of buttery, garlicky delicious to toss the fries in, so I steamed the beans and then tossed them in it also. Delicious. N went to see Lil Wayne in concert, F had a volleyball match followed by going to the HS football game, and Tom and T got cheese steaks from Cheessteaks in Merchantville.

Saturday: Holy City Publick House

So much for not getting too much takeout. In my defense, I was adjusting to being back in the office and having the kids back in school. And it was pretty hot this week.

Lunches: bought all three days in the office, but two of them were just soup ($2.49).

Spending: $213 on an oil change (like gas, it’s higher now) and new wiper blades, $175 for the high school activity fee, $25 on more school supplies, $4 on a prescription, $54 to fill up the CR-V’s tank; $80 to get my hair cut (hadn’t been cut since January!); $25 donation to the volleyball team.

Today I plan to make gravy. That’ll be one homemade meal at least. And we still have plenty of beans. So many beans.

Here’s a pretty pic from a walk with Rocco. Have a nice week!
